Description
This bundle includes Sherman Hawkins’ Promised End: The Last Scene of King Lear (1st edition, 2019), edited by Seth Collings Hawkins, Katy Hawkins, and Daniel Hawkins, along with the Arden Shakespeare’s edition of King Lear, edited by R. A. Foakes (third series, 1997).
Hawkins’ text Promised End is described here.
The Arden text includes the entirety of Shakespeare’s play King Lear. Its introduction describes this play standing “like a colossus at the centre of Shakespeare’s achievement as the grandest effort of his imagination”; Sherman Hawkins simply describes it as Shakespeare’s greatest play. For centuries the play, in its vastness of scope and depth of suffering, was thought to be unactable. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the text came to be appreciated as a stage play—opening it not only to the textual but also the dramatic analyses that together form the heart of Hawkins’ Promised End. The Arden text also includes a full set of illustrations and a comprehensive 148 page analysis of both the folio and quarto texts by editor R. A. Foakes.
The full retail price of these two texts is $132.57. This bundle offers both together for $95, a 30% discount of the combined retail price.
